‘Mixed Roots’ Spice Blends
Kalpana’s back story is that she loves to think of herself as “The Original Spice Girl”! Born into a family whose language of love is best described as “food”, she set about re-discovering the authentic and rich flavours that she grew up with, searching memories to re-create flavours that reminded her of the much loved women in her family, namely her grandmothers and mother.
To satisfy her love for spice, and her passion for saving the world from below-average curry, Kalpana started the process of de-mystifying Indian food with batch crafted mixes blended from her home base of Motueka. While staying true to the traditional recipes, Kalpana has made tweaks to adapt to the changing tastes of the buying public.
And within the range is gluten free, dairy free, vegan friendly and low foodmap friendly options while the jars of spice rubs, spice infused honeys and cold pressed olive oils pack in authentic and rich flavours, full of oomph to make your meal shine!
In Kalpana’s own words, “I love food, people and stories (not necessarily in that order) and am happiest with all of them in one room. I‘m look forward to sharing with you my journey through stories of our home kitchen experiments (some more successful than others), through the family recipes handed down over generations, and through my own recipes.”

A simple way to use the spice mixes is to add to soups, stews, stir-fries or curries. Stir into mayonnaise, hummus, sour cream or cream cheese to create a customised dip or topping. Mix with a splash of olive oil to create a marinade for meat and veges.
Or follow the recipe on the Hurry Curry jar to make a quick and delicious curry. One of Kalpana’s favourite uses of the Hot Stuff curry oil is drizzling it over eggs.
